How Genetics Answers the Question of Armenian Origins

Modern genetics is increasingly becoming one of the key tools for studying the ancient history of nations. While written sources allow us to look back only a few millennia, DNA analysis makes it possible to trace the origin of a population much deeper and answer questions that have long remained the subject of scientific debate.

According to Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Levon Yepiskoposyan, it is population genetics today that helps understand which components formed the Armenian gene pool, how much it has changed over millennia, and what impact numerous migrations and conquests have had on it.

What Components Comprise the Armenian Gene Pool

According to the scientist, the modern Armenian gene pool cannot be described as particularly diverse in its origin. It includes two main components: the first is the Caucasian component, linked to the ancient population of the South Caucasus—the hunters and gatherers who inhabited this region in deep antiquity; the second is the Near Eastern component, formed as a result of multi-millennial contacts between the population of the Armenian Highlands and neighboring territories of Near East (Western Asia).

At the same time, the European component in the genetic makeup of modern Armenians is quite weakly expressed. “Our gene pool consists mainly of local Caucasian and Near Eastern components. The European component is represented very negligibly,” Yepiskoposyan noted.

According to him, such a structure is characteristic not only of Armenians, but also of most peoples of the South Caucasus.

Why the European Component Turned Out to Be Minimal

The professor explains this primarily through the geography of the region. For millennia, the Caucasus Mountains served as a powerful natural barrier that significantly restricted population migrations between the north and the south. According to Yepiskoposyan, the mountain system effectively prevented the mass penetration of new populations.

“The Caucasus Range was a very serious obstacle. It effectively limited population infiltration for millennia,” the scientist noted. This is precisely why the European genetic contribution to the population of the South Caucasus turned out to be significantly smaller than what might be expected if one were to consider only the region’s geographical proximity to Europe.

In the researcher’s view, modern genetic data do not allow for characterizing the population of the South Caucasus as predominantly European by origin.

How Much Have Numerous Conquests Altered the Armenian Gene Pool

One of the most frequently asked questions remains the impact of the numerous invasions that took place on the territory of Armenia over the past millennium and a half.

This refers primarily to the migrations and invasions of various Turkic-speaking tribes, which historically exerted a massive political influence on the region. However, according to Yepiskoposyan, the genetic picture looks different.

The study of the Y-chromosome, which is passed down exclusively through the male line, showed an extremely negligible contribution of Central Asian Turkic populations to the modern Armenian gene pool.

“We see that the influence of Turkic-speaking newcomers is virtually absent. The maximum figure is around 0.5 percent,” the professor noted. Similar results were obtained in the study of mitochondrial DNA.

During the analysis of approximately four hundred samples, researchers discovered only a single case of a mitochondrial lineage of Central Asian origin. According to the scientist, such results show that large-scale political changes are by no means always accompanied by an equally large-scale population replacement.

Even centuries of dominance by various states and numerous migratory processes did not lead to a significant restructuring of the genetic core of the Armenian population.

Historical Armenia Has Reveled Itself on the Genetic Map

Another fascinating direction of research was the study of the geography of the Armenian gene pool. According to Yepiskoposyan, an international group of researchers constructed a map of the genetic similarity of the region’s population.

The results showed that the territory of maximum genetic proximity practically coincides with the borders of Historical Armenia. “If you look closely at the map, the zone of greatest genetic similarity surprisingly corresponds to the territory of Historical Armenia,” the scientist shared.

He emphasized that this work was carried out by an international team of researchers, which included specialists from Armenia, Germany, the United Kingdom, Estonia, and Russia. According to the professor, this makes the obtained results particularly compelling.

The study demonstrates that the Armenian gene pool is still most widely represented precisely on the territory of Historical Armenia, despite numerous wars, migrations, and shifts in state borders.
