Thomas de Waal: Turkey supports Pashinyan, he is an ideal partner for themThomas de Waal: Turkey supports Pashinyan, he is an ideal partner for them

Turkey, of course, supports Pashinyan; he is an ideal partner for them. Thomas de Waal, a leading researcher at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and an expert on Caucasus issues, expressed such an opinion on the air of Armenian News-NEWS.am’s “Factor of Power” program.

De Waal added that Turkey is preparing for various plans in this regard.

“The biggest move will be the opening of the border with Armenia. But Turkey is waiting for a signal from Baku to advance this agenda,” de Waal noted.

Also, the analyst believes that the factor of external forces will have a decisive impact on the outcome of the upcoming parliamentary elections in Armenia.

“This is due to the fact that these elections are not just ordinary elections for the formation of power, but also a unique referendum to determine the country’s foreign policy course, and [PM Nikol] Pashinyan is playing on this. In addition, there is a desire in both Armenian and Azerbaijani societies to stop the bloodshed, and Pashinyan skillfully uses this factor,” de Waal noted.

At the same time, in his opinion, Azerbaijan’s demand to make amendments to Armenia’s constitution will be difficult to implement after the Armenian elections, including in the event of Pashinyan’s victory. Thomas de Waal doubts that this matter will receive the approval of the Armenian public during the referendum.
